Ocean of
Consciousness.
“You are not your thoughts. You are the ocean of
consciousness from which your thoughts arise. Instead of identifying with the
rocky surface waves, become the ocean depth, still and unmoving.”
The metaphor starts out by questioning the common association of
thinking. It asks us to acknowledge that thoughts are fleeting and always
changing, much like surface waves. The secret is to recognise that we are
nothing more than the enormous, immutable sea of consciousness from whence
these ideas originate.
Becoming
the Ocean Depth
The advice goes beyond recognition to include a call to action. The
metaphor challenges us to explore the oceanic depths of awareness rather than
attaching our identity to the rocky surface waves of thoughts. This is where
there is a significant change from the turbulent state of ideas to the peaceful
essence of existence in the silence and motionless space.
The Power
of Now
"Realize
deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus
of your life." - Eckhart Tolle. The
substance of the metaphor is consistent with Tolle's teachings. Being in the
present moment, which is frequently free of mental turbulence, opens the door
to communicating with the deeper ocean of consciousness. The doorway to inner
tranquilly is the "Now".
The
Illusion of Ego
"You
are an aperture through which the universe is looking at and exploring
itself." - Alan Watts. The viewpoint
of Watts is consistent with the notion of eclipsing identification with
thoughts. Understanding oneself as a vehicle through which the universe
perceives itself suggests that there is a deeper, more expansive consciousness
than the transient character of thinking.
Finding
Stillness in the Depths
The voyage from surface waves to ocean depths, metaphorically speaking,
extends an invitation to introspection. Being free to become the vast ocean of
consciousness comes from realising that we are not limited to the stony surface
of our thoughts. To have a closer relationship with our actual nature,
Eckhart Tolle and Alan Watts' teachings place further emphasis on the value of
living in the present moment and overcoming the illusion of ego.
May we pay attention to this metaphor's wisdom as we traverse the
currents of our awareness, going beyond the fleeting waves of thought to
find the infinite calm within the ocean of our inner selves? In this silence, we discover peace and a deep connection to the immeasurable, eternal field of awareness that is our true nature.
